General Information

Organization
Atatürk Faculty of Education is the oldest/rooted teacher training institution in Turkey. Because the roots of this institution go back to Dârülmuallimîn-i Rüşdî, which was opened in 1848.
After the proclamation of the Republic, Dârülmuallimîn-i Âliye operated as Yüksek Muallim Mektebi for a while. In 1923-1924, the Talî Section was opened to train teachers for secondary schools, replacing the İhzârî Section, which had been closed a few years earlier. However, this section did not last long. In 1936, the school was renamed Higher Teacher Training School and became an institution that trained only high school teachers. Until 1959, it remained the only high school teacher training institution in Turkey. The part of the school that trained primary school teachers operated separately from this institution under the name of Boys' Teacher Training School. In the 1946-1947 academic year, Istanbul Atatürk Institute of Education was opened to fulfill the mission of Dârülmuallimîn-i Rüşdî, which had opened in 1848, and to train teachers for secondary schools. Soon, this new institution became one of the most qualified teacher training institutions in Turkey.
In 1978, education and training at the Atatürk Institute of Education was also suspended. Two years later, in 1980, the Atatürk Institute of Education was reopened as Atatürk Higher Teacher Training School.
In 1982, Atatürk Higher Teacher Training School was renamed as Atatürk Faculty of Education and became one of the constituent units of the newly established Marmara University with the legal regulation that brought all higher education institutions under the umbrella of the Council of Higher Education.
In 1998, Atatürk Faculty of Education was restructured by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), along with all faculties of education in the country.
In this history, the Department of Painting and Drawing has made valuable contributions to education and training.
